About The City Harvest

The City Harvest had its humble beginnings as a small urban farm in a plot of public land in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The primary focus our small operation was to produce the best possible organic microgreens and other produce for local restaurants and specialty retailers within a few kilometers of the farm. We implemented intensive farming techniques based strictly on organic and regenerative methods, with a hard focus on establishing and maintaining healthy living soil. We focused mostly on production and sales for the first two years, and slowly started venturing into teaching and training other small farmers who were interested in our approach.

This lead to bit of shift for our team, as we began to experiment and test various growing methods and production systems for small market gardens in the urban setting. As a results, and as we continue to develop and test procedures empirically today, we have built a body of knowledge that we feel we must share with a growing number of urban farmers and small growers all over the world. Our intention now is to take what we’ve learnt at the The City Harvest and create a valuable and deep digital resource of information, methodologies and procedures that will help to spread the art and the science of small plot farming.

We will cover as many aspects of small plot and market gardening as possible – from basic seed starting methods, transplanting techniques, weed control, harvesting and processing, to reviews and discussions about the best tools for the small farm. We’ll also venture into digital tools and other resources that are valuable and worthwhile for both beginners and advanced growers.

We encourage those who visit The City Harvest to join our growing community – we’ll share your comments, your suggestions and ideas, and we hope to host some of our contributors to also participate in adding to our content and this growing database of knowledge.
